With Oktoberfest here, we couldn’t resist talking about summer sausage. European in origin, it captured Wisconsin residents’ hearts during the German migration. Many people settled in the Badger State during that time and shared their sausage recipes with others. Of course they also brought that other great staple with them, beer.

Summer Sausage and Beer Please!

So, if you are going to serve a summer sausage on an October afternoon, choose a German beer to match. Smoky, spiced varieties tend to pair well with strong stouts and amber lagers. And let’s not forget the Braunschweiger liverwurst. It generally stands up well to a robust brew too. Light sausages, on the other hand, are probably best served with one of Germany’s pale ales.

Round Out Those Snack Platters

We know that quite a few Germans will also be slicing up cheese to go with those summer sausages. After all, many of those early immigrants went on to start their own dairy farms and sell cheeses to their neighbors. Plus, Germans have always loved cheese. Bearing that in mind, our cheese wheels, spreads and blocks would really compliment a Oktoberfest meal. The same is true for our dipping pretzels, pretzel dips, limited edition steins, horseradish products and pickles. They’ll round out snack platters and bar setups perfectly.

Go for a Meaty, Main Meal

If a main meal is on your mind, summer sausage is still sure to please. Combine it with drunken potatoes, German casseroles, meat pies, European beer breads, hot slaws and other cherished dishes. A few that will taste fabulous are sauerkraut, pierogis, fruited cabbage, beer-battered veggies and currywurst sandwiches.

To find all the German deli essentials you need to usher in Oktoberfest 2015, please contact Deli Direct and place your order today. We'll ship the summer sausages and other items directly to you right away.

It makes a heckuva chip dip, a sauce for everything from Prime Rib to a roast beef sandwich and an exquisite accompaniment to seafood of any type. It opens up the sinuses, makes the eyes water and the brain freeze. No, it’s not ice cream, it’s horseradish. It’s been used as both medicinal and condiment since the Egyptians. No one seems to know the origins of the root, but its good effects have been clearing respiratory tracts around the world.

History

The main ingredient of horseradish products has a bit of a sneaky history. It is thought to be first described by Pliny the Elder as Armoracia, a member of the broccoli family. It has appeared from Russia to Europe as Cochlearia macrocarpa, a plant closely resembling and used much like Armoracia, but slightly different. So we have a plant masquerading as another and appearing right about the same time-frame, around 3,000 years. People looked askance at it at first, but soon found comforting uses for it.

Medicinal Uses

In olden times, horseradish was used as an expectorant, a rub for arthritis and other joint aches, a cure for chilblains and much more. Taken internally, the root clears the chest, helps with flu and cold symptoms, aids the digestion and is a diuretic. Modern science, however, has found a new facet of the root to be useful, which is glucosinolates. These aid the liver in “detoxifying carcinogens and may suppress the growth of tumors” reports research entity Life Extension. Horseradish’s antibiotic properties fight urinary tract infections, coughs and bronchitis. Got muscles aches or dandruff? Use horseradish. Searching for an aphrodisiac? You got it. Horseradish. This is one of the few roots for which processing actually increases its medicinal efficiency.

Condiment

It wasn’t until the 17th century that horseradish began to be used as a condiment. The root was mainly used by persons performing hard labor jobs and country folk. No one knew what to do with it, so they tried it on everything. Traditionally used on meats and seafood, prepared horseradish sauces can be used in a variety of ways such as:

  • Mix two teaspoons Deli Direct Super Hot Horseradish Sauce with one quarter cup sour cream as a baked potato topper
  • Combine four strips of finely chopped bacon, one quarter cup sour cream, two teaspoons Deli Direct Super Hot Horseradish Sauce, salt and pepper to taste and one pound of Brussels sprouts. Cook until sprouts are done, about 20 minutes
  • Stem 24 mushrooms and dip them in butter. Place on a cookie sheet. Stuff mushrooms with one clam. Top these with a mixture of five tablespoons Deli Direct Super Hot Horseradish Sauce, eight tablespoons mayonnaise and one teaspoon Worcestershire. Broil for approximately eight minutes or until ingredients are browned
  • Mix one tablespoon Deli Direct Super Hot Horseradish Sauce, one tablespoon Dijon mustard and one tablespoon fresh chopped parsley into one half cup mayonnaise for an eye-opening beginning to a great sandwich

Now, we leave it up to you if you want to rub this versatile product into sore knees, achy lower backs or even on your chest in the event of congestion. Rubbing it in your hair to defeat dandruff might feel a little strange, but we’re confident it will do the trick for you. As an aphrodisiac, well, we’ll leave that up to you. However, we are experts at making a product that will enhance many more recipes than those included here. So, bon appétit and make sure to contact us with any new uses for this spicy addition to meals.

The NRA (no, silly, the National Restaurant Association!) recently identified the food trends to watch in 2015, which were gleaned from a survey of 1,300 professional chefs. Pickles were high on the list and dubbed the “Throwback Thursday of food trends.”

Throwback? Yeah… waaay back. Pickles have been around since the Mesopotamians discovered the pickling method in 2400 B.C.E. The average American eats 8.5 pickles a year, with dill being twice as popular as sweet pickles. Many cultures value pickles and pickle juice as a cure for headaches, hangovers, cramps and heartburn.

But sadly, pickles have sometimes been treated like a joke.

What’s sour and green and floats in an aquarium?

A trop-pickle fish.

Groan.

Obviously, it’s time to give the pickle its due—1,300 chefs can’t be wrong!

When you’re getting ready to entertain guests, think like a chef and pop in some pickle flavor. No time to do the pickling yourself? No problem. Deli Direct has the unique artisan-made pickle flavors you need, and the perfect party dips to pair them with.

It’s as easy as 1-2-3:

Step 1: Order your five-pack of dip seasonings, selecting from the fun flavors available.
Step 2: Order pickles or some Hot and Spicy Pickled Beans.
Step 3: Combine in tasty and interesting ways.

For example, combine Dick’s Perky Pickles (you can even buy them by the gallon) with Kickin’ Tomato Horseradish Dip/Seasoning.

Mix JoJo’s Kick N’ Hot Kosher Dill Pickles with Cha Cha Chipotle Dip.

Or perk up this Tomato, Horseradish & Artichoke dip recipe by adding some chopped Bloody Mary chopped pickles.

Have fun and relax knowing your pickle-laced party dips will be trendy and tasty.

Did you know that the uniquely named horseradish plant is actually a close cousin to broccoli and cabbage? The horseradish plant grows to about five feet tall and is distinguishable by its thick, waxy leaves and clusters of white flowers. However, the star of the show that is made into many different horseradish products, is the long, white root of the horseradish plant. Horseradish is known for its pungent, spicy flavor and is typically used to add intense flavor to sauces, salad dressings, cocktails and as a topping for roast beef.
