BBQ sauces aren’t just for briskets, burgers, picnic shoulders and chuck roasts. We know of Deli Direct fans who like to use our barbecue sauces to make meatballs, meatloaf and pizza. But we bet you didn’t know BBQ sauces may be used to make compound butters, salad dressings, deviled eggs, refried beans, sandwich spreads, jellies and cocktails too! It’s a delicious, smoky fact.

Barbecue Sauce Basics

Whipping up BBQ refried beans, deviled eggs, compound butters, sandwich spreads and salad dressings are generally as easily as stirring in some sauce. So today, we’re going to focus on the cocktails and jellies because they require a bit more finesse. Let’s start with the base of great, BBQ sauce cocktails, simple syrup. It’s nothing more than equal parts granulated or brown sugar and water that get heated on to the stove. One cup of each will typically yield you 1-1/2 cups of syrup.

Big Bad Bubba’s Barbecue Bar Syrup

Once you have your sugar and water into the pot, reach for a bottle of Big Bad Bubba’s Barbecue Sauce. Add about ¼ of a cup to the pot, a little at a time, tasting as you go. When the syrup develops enough barbecue flavor to please your palate, stop and bottle it. It should stay fresh in the fridge for about a week, providing that you don’t use it all up before then. During happy hour, simply use the barbecue syrup every time a cocktail recipe calls for regular simple syrup.

Big Bad Bubba’s Barbecue Jelly

Now let’s move on to the barbecue jelly. Ask home canning enthusiasts and they’ll tell you that jelly recipes typically start with fruit pectin, a liquid and granulated sugar. The unique flavors come from the liquid and whatever fruits or vegetables are added to the mix. To make barbecue flavored ones, we’d suggest using Kraft’s freezer apple or hot pepper jelly recipe with a twist. Simply replace one half of the apple juice with Big Bad Bubba’s Barbecue Sauce and ta dah! You’ll be able to enjoy some of the best barbecue jelly in the world. This Cinco de Mayo, give our hot sauces and Tango Taco Dip their independence by helping them stand out sombreros over the rest. And it won’t be hard to do either. There are probably more ways to use our hot sauces and taco seasonings than there are tequila bottles and agave plants in Jalisco. For instance, you could use the hot sauces and our collection of bloody Mary mixes to make an incredible array of classic bar drinks. Among them are bloody Marys, shooters, Michelantros, flatliners and sangritas.

If you’re not much of a bartender, we’d suggest going with the Michelantros. They’re nothing more than a mixture of beer, lime juice, hot sauce and cilantro vodka served in salt-rimmed glasses. Oh, and you’ll need a lime wedge garnish. The beer traditionally takes up most of the glass, followed by a jigger of cilantro vodka and a smidgen of lime juice. As for the hot sauce, add as many dashes as you dare. We’ve got five different ones for you and your guests to choose from, including one that’s got a 234,000 Scoville units rating. Now that’s a real tongue-number!

As far as the Tango Taco Dip goes, you could serve it the traditional way or consequir salvaje y loco. And for all of you non-Spanglish speakers out there, that means getting wild and crazy. For example, you might want to use the dip to make taco sliders, five alarm chili or Mexican spice-rubbed steaks. Can anyone say, “bloody Mary pickles?”

4.) Stuffed Olives

Okay, so we know that stuffed olives are typical holiday fare but there are ways to make them atypical. For example, you could stuff them with ingredients that no one would expect. Excellent choices include asparagus, pearl onions, garlic cloves, artichokes, bleu cheese and jalapeno.

5.) Chubby Cheeks

Lastly, why not get a little corny? To do just that, create one or a series of bowls that contain our Chubby Cheeks snack. It’s a churro caramel corn nugget treat that tastes great alone or with a few modifications. To alter the nuggets flavor, think about adding a dusting of powdered sugar, carob or cocoa.

Just in case you did not know the first Saturday of August is National Mustard Day! It is true that last Saturday was the first of the month, but it snuck up on us so fast that we decided it would be best to celebrate this glorious day now! Here at Deli Direct we have many delicious specialty sauces that are an easy way to change up the same old boring dinners we are all guilty of making. They are great dips, toppings and marinades! However, even though all of our specialty sauces are great we are going to focus on our mustards. After all we are celebrating National Mustard Day!

We have three different mustards that fulfill a large range of flavors. To start, for our horseradish lovers out there we have our Horseradish Mustard! Our savory blend of coarsely milled brown mustard and zesty horseradish is a great addition to any sandwich especially roast beef! A delicious but super easy recipe that includes our yummy Horseradish Mustard is a horseradish sauce. This sauce is great for an array of meats, such as steak, pork and roast beef.

Our next celebration worthy mustard is our Santa Fe Sauce. This mustard is a delicious blend of slightly sweet stone-ground mustard and a little “bite” of the southwest. This is a perfect zest to spread on your sandwiches and is perfect for dipping your veggies and pretzels too! It’s one of my favorite sauces!

We have saved the best for last, our Triple Treat Honey Glaze Spread and Dip! Spread it! Dip it! Glaze it! This mustard has a unique blend of fresh stone-ground mustard and honey. It is perfect for a holiday ham, sandwich or just as a pretzel dip. Our Triple Treat is also very near and dear to our hearts. It is one of our first sauces and was name after our set of triplets. You get a little piece of Deli Direct history when you have this mustard! This sweet mustard is the absolute perfect way to top off National Mustard Day!

Did you know that beef jerky has its own holiday?! Not any old holiday, it has its very own national holiday! June 12th is National Beef Jerky Day! Sadly this sacred day only comes once a year, but when it comes we like to celebrate it!
