A gift basket is a timeless present that can be adapted to practically any occasion or person. Unfortunately, people often think of gift baskets as being generic or lacking the personal touch that makes a gift so special. But at Deli Direct, we’re here to prove that creating a thoughtful and unique gift basket isn’t just possible, it’s also simple!

So, it’s time to think out of the box—literally. When it comes to finding the simplest way to make unique gift baskets, we’ve got you covered. With our assortment of gourmet edibles and gifts, you can find a variety of great items to fill your gift basket or simply let us custom-build a basket for you!

First, there are two things to consider when creating the perfect, personalized gift basket.

  1. What is the recipient's personality? Funny or sober? Light-hearted or intense? Studious or athletic? Bookish or a video game aficionado? A dreamer or a pragmatist? Personality affects taste, so you need to know something about your recipient to put together a gift they'll really enjoy.
  2. What does he or she like? What are their hobbies? What activities do they engage in?

Now, for practice, let's take a few personality types and potential hobbies and activities and see where it takes us!

It's your best friend's birthday. He's an outgoing guy who likes to fish, play baseball, and chuck horseshoes with his kids. Let's build a gift basket.

A fishing creel is an excellent and totally different gift container. Stuff it with some small but interesting fishing gear, a baseball cap, or baseball cards of his favorite players, and a 'family fun' horseshoe set. And don’t forget about the snacks!

For an active man who likes to munch while waiting for a fish to bite, gourmet hot salami is a sure hit. Accompany it with hot pepper cheese, and if the fish don't bite, the food sure will! Up the ante with Redneck Fire in the Hole stuffed olives—whoa! You'll make his day! Sneak in Sea Salt Caramel Delight spice dip and graham crackers so he can share some of the goodies with his family.

Your mother just completed a wood-carving course and really wants to share her new skill. Congratulate her with a gift basket, something fitting for a bright, happy woman who 'goes for it.

How about a large wood tool box or basket? Whatever you use, maintain the wood theme. Give her a few carving tools that she might not have yet. Perhaps a subscription to a woodcarver's magazine. And, obviously, goodies are a must. Tasty crackers, 95% fat-free Lite Summer Sausage, and Sun-Dried Tomato and Basil Cheese will bring a smile. If she loves cheese spread, add a yummy spread like Swiss Almond Cheese Spread. A packet of butter cookies and Chocolate S'Mores Dip will turn that smile to a laugh.

Getting the idea?

It's National Boss Day and you want to show your boss appreciation. He's a quiet man who likes to sit in his lounge chair at home, feet up, reading or watching the news. His favorite outside activity is grilling for family and friends.

Package your gift in a sophisticated but simple basket. Toss in a couple of books by his favorite authors. Most importantly, give him something to grill like a couple New York Strip Steaks or juicy Smoked Bratwurst and Cheddar links. Don't forget the flavoring. If you go with steak, tuck in a bottle of Big Bad Bubba’s BBQ sauce, but if it's the bratwurst, nothing will do but Horseradish Mustard! Expect to get a raise.

Hopefully, you’re beginning to see how it works. Consider who it is that you’re giving your basket to, then find a unique and useful container that suits their personality, as well as the occasion. Just stuff your gift basket with goodies you know they’ll love for an all-around wonderful gift.

Gift baskets are a common part of our modern culture. You got them when you were a kid on Easter morning, and you receive them as tokens of appreciation and well-wishes from hotels, business partners, family, or friends.

However, gift baskets aren't a modern invention. They've been around for centuries, stretching back to the time when baskets were far more than just an interesting centerpiece on your dining room table. Let’s take a look at the bizarre history behind gift baskets and how they’ve evolved into the presents we know today.

Gift Baskets Throughout History

In the long ago and far away, baskets were an important part of everyday life. People used baskets to carry food from the garden or to carry smaller animals back from a hunt. Baskets were hung from beasts of burden like saddlebags and worn across the shoulders like backpacks. They were, in a very real sense, a huge part of day-to-day life.

Because of that daily importance, baskets figured symbolically in our mythology as a vessel for gifts and bounty.

Street Directory points out the significance of the goddess Eostre. Eostre was a pagan goddess who was popular in Germanic cultures and represented fertility and life. She's also seen by some as an older patron of the holiday we now know as Easter (in case the name wasn't a dead giveaway). Eostre carried a basket, and in that basket were young plants, which would be given as offerings on this sacred holiday. This is why, when we celebrate the holiday, we tend to give gifts like an assorted fruit drops basket.

Of course, Eostre is far from the only mythological example we can draw on. The horn of plenty, or cornucopia, was the source of the god Zeus' nourishment as a child, when he hid from his father so he wouldn't be eaten. That same horn was often depicted at feasts, spilling over with fruit and sweets, but rather than made of actual horn it was often woven, making it a strangely shaped basket. And, of course, who could forget the story of Moses, placed in a basket and put in the river (along with crocodiles, hippos, and other cuddly beasts), who floated his way into the home of Egypt's pharaoh?

With baskets given prominence in our myths, it was only natural that we gave them symbolic importance as part of holidays and special occasions. And, as traditions expanded and more people interacted with each other, gift baskets became more common.

Going Beyond Holidays

While there's no saying for certain how gift baskets went from a holiday tradition (something you gave a few times a year or at events like weddings) to an everyday present, the transition has definitely occurred. Today, all you have to do is type the words "gift basket" into a search engine, and you'll find gift baskets of all different shapes, sizes, and fillings, ranging from elegant to unusual. You’ll find everything from a basket full of gourmet beef jerky (like the jerky beer bucket) to an arrangement of beautiful fruits and cheeses (like the sweet treats gift basket), and that's just on the first page of results!

It's impossible to say precisely how the gift basket became such a modern-day staple. It remains one of our earliest recorded methods of gift giving (since baskets were a lot more common that sequined wrapping paper back in the B.C. days), and despite all the advances we've made technologically and culturally, it still clings on. Of course, part of that may be because everyone loves getting gifts, and there's something so whimsical about getting a gift basket that it always catches us off guard. And well, sometimes novelty is really the best part of getting a gift.

A cheese gift basket is a unique and delicious gift that is perfect for so many occasions. Whether you want to give a gift "just because" or you're celebrating a special moment in a friend or loved one's life, a cheese gift basket is a great way to show you care. Looking for some great ideas? Consider these three perfect occasions for giving cheese gift baskets.

Birth of a Baby

Cheese gift baskets make wonderful gifts after the birth of a child. The parents are exhausted, and they probably don’t have a lot of time on their hands to prepare meals. In the days and weeks following the birth of their new baby, they’re more likely to snack and graze on whatever they have around. Cheese makes the ideal snackable gift. Have it delivered directly to their home or bring it to them in the hospital to provide a welcomed alternative to bland hospital food. The basket isn’t just practical, though. It’s also an excellent way to let the couple know you care and share in their joy.

Wedding Anniversaries

Cheese baskets make fabulous gifts for friends or relatives celebrating their wedding anniversaries. Most couples want to celebrate over a quiet, romantic evening, and a cheese basket is a perfect addition to their night. Pair it with a bottle of the couple's favorite wine to create a thoughtful and delectable gift. Having a beautiful basket of quality cheeses gives them something to munch on while they enjoy each other's company and reminisce.

Housewarming Gift

A cheese gift basket is also a great way to welcome someone into their new home. In the chaos of moving, unloading, and unpacking, the pantries and refrigerator often sit empty. A basket of delicious cheeses and crackers is the perfect snack to satisfy your friends’ appetites as they get settled into their new home. If your friends enjoy cooking, you can even include the extra ingredients to make a whole meal, including directions for this tasty macaroni and cheese recipe.

The Best Macaroni and Cheese

Whether you are a competitive sports observer or a competitive eater, Superbowl Sunday has something for everyone.  Deli Direct has a few football themed tips to help you score a touchdown with your Superbowl Sunday participation.

Don't get intercepted at a busy store! Most stores get extra crowded selling chips and generic cheese dip right before Superbowl Sunday.  Save yourself the hassle by having it delivered. When the price is comparable to the big stores and the quality exceeds what you can purchase on those shelves, buy it online!

Kickoff your party with flavorful sauces, salsas, and horseradish products! Your guests will love the kick of heat along side their beer as they watch the game (or hover protectively over the snack table).

If you aren't hosting a party, don't fumble the host gift! Take the effort out of gift buying with one of many cheese and sausage gift baskets options. Your host will be surprised and delighted by your gift and you might even get to share some of the delightful treats if they add it to their spread. Now that's winning!

Score a field goal with fun dessert dips! While chip dips are expected, dessert dips add excitement to the game.  Try them with strawberries, grapes or graham crackers. Your competitive eaters will appreciate it and definitely score you an extra three points.

Whatever your Superbowl Sunday plans, score a safety by planning ahead, ordering high quality, american made products like cheese, sausages and dips from company that makes ordering online simple. Contact us here to place an order today!

What do you do with a man who has more than enough cologne and neckties? Should you get him fancy cufflinks that he’ll probably never wear or a smoking jacket that will most likely never make it off of the bathroom hook? Nah, why not take a page out of grandma’s book of proverbs instead? She always said that the way to win a fella’s heart was with something tasty.

If an apron is the last thing you want to put on, don’t worry. Meat and cheese gift baskets can come to the rescue! They’ll give any man a tasty treat he’ll long remember and you won’t have to get your hands or clothes dirty in the process. Simply look, point and click on the perfect meat and cheese gift basket for Mr. Wonderful. Then wait for it to be delivered and hand it over to him with a smile. Shazam! Your gift giving problem solved.

And what if your man isn’t a fan of meat and cheese gift baskets? Hey, it happens from time to time because not every guy on the planet is a carnivore. For the vegans and vegetarians among us, we’d suggest creating custom baskets overflowing with martini olives, fruits, hot sauce, horseradish and Chubby Cheeks. Oh, and we can’t forget about the wasabi peas, party dips, sweet heat salsa and any number of other deli goodies.

What’s that you say? What about those new boyfriends, coworkers and others who may feel funny about receiving gigantic baskets of treats from the ladies in their lives?  Well, you could scale back and make stocking stuffer size gifts out of treats like garam marsala stoneground mustard and beef sticks. They just big enough to say, “Hey, I’m thinking about you”, without making them worry that you’re ready to sit down and plan a wedding.

Shut your eyes and imagine that the snow is gently falling outside. Inside, a person is leaning over a big, steaming bowl full of soup and indulging in a heaping spoonful. It’s a classic, American scene to be sure but it may be improved upon with the addition of cheese spreads. Cheese spreads bring something extra to a meal and personally, we can’t think of spending National Soup Month without them.

Don’t believe us? Consider bowlfuls of French onion soup. They’re normally topped with what? That’s right, ooey goey cheese. Well what if you tossed the shredded, Wisconsin cheese to the side and reached for a dollop of toasted onion spread instead? It’s made with creamy cheddar cheese, onions and chives. Now doesn’t that sound like a perfect way to top off a bowl full of French onion soup?

French onion isn’t the only soup that would welcome a little dollop or two of premium cheese spreads. We think that potato, spinach and broccoli soups would taste amazing with bleu cheese spread. Simply stir some into the soup before bringing the bowls to the table. And if you really want to elevate the meal more, add some deli meats, like beef sticks and smoked pepperoni.

Cube them up as part of a soup topping or serve them with artisan breads. Either way would surely garner two thumbs up from everyone fortunate enough to be at the table. And don’t let your imagination stop with the soup and cheese spread combinations we’ve already mentioned. After all, National Soup Month only comes around once a year. So live it up by enjoying as many cheesy, hot combinations as possible.

Presently, there are more than a dozen cheese spreads and thousands of soup recipes to choose from. Thus, making it through the month without having the same soup twice should be easy. To learn more about pairing cheese spreads with soups during the month of January and beyond, please contact us.

With the holidays right around the corner, well really they're here! It's time to stock up on gifts. You know the horrible feeling that you got last year (or maybe the last 5). That feeling in your gut that immediately says, "You forgot to get a gift for..." It has happened to everyone. You know you don't want to go to the mall again or show up empty-handed, so make the easy choice with Deli Direct's cheese gift baskets. You can be sure you have all the bases loaded for the rest of the season and the holidays. Plus, who doesn't love cheese? And if you think they have cheese already...more never hurts.

Deli Direct has a cheese gift basket for anyone:

With these options and many more, you can't get the wrong gift for anyone this upcoming holiday season. Why not also keep Deli Direct's cheese gift baskets in mind for company gifts, game day snacks, parties, or any other future event? Nothing adds to the fun like the gift of cheese (the basket is extra)!

Be sure to contact Deli Direct for any occasion, and check out the promotion pages, because not only do you love cheese...you love deals too!

In no time, we’ll be putting on our turkey hats and strutting into the best neighborhood parties. What about you? Will you be gobbling up the holiday hospitality? If so, don’t go to your loved ones’ events empty-handed. Bring deli meats. Otherwise, you’re apt to feel like Miles Standish at a medieval joust, woefully unprepared. Here’s how to show up at any local event looking like a standup pilgrim:

Buy a small gift for the host and hostess, like our Deli Direct® Thanksgiving Bucket. It has a little something they can enjoy after all the guests go home but don’t stop there. Make an antipasto or charcuterie board with our deli meats and cheeses that everyone can share before dinner. Every antipasto platter or charcuterie board, regardless of size, would look fantastic with the following:

  • Hard and Soft Cheeses (Mild to Strong)
  • Dry Cured Sausages and Crusty Breads
  • Salted Nuts and Olives
  • Assorted Olives (Stuffed and Natural)
  • Shaved Meats and Condiments
  • Fatback and Pate or Terrine
  • Pickled Delights and Sweet Chutneys
  • Dried Fruits and Jams
  • Crunchy Offerings (e.g. Chubby Cheeks)

If you’re unsure of how much of each to place on to the board or platter, don’t worry. Party planning experts widely agree that three ounces of each should suffice for most November shindigs. After all, most people will pick at the platters and save their appetites for the main course. And if there are deli meats leftover, simply leave them behind for your host or hostess.

Of course you could take the novel approach towards holiday platters by skipping the meats and cheeses altogether. For example, you could grab a bunch of A Spice Above Dip Mixes and make a sweets platter complete with bite-sized baked goods. We’re sure that everyone would love noshing on them after dinner, especially if coffee is being served. To learn more and spread the bounty around town, please contact Deli Direct® today.

Although you might have gifted plenty of meat and cheese gift baskets in the past, you might have never thought about purchasing them for yourself. However, it's a good idea to buy a few nice gift baskets from Deli Direct and keep them on hand during the upcoming holiday season. These are a few reasons why you won't regret it if you do.

Be Prepared for Impromptu Guests

First of all, the holiday season is always a season of visiting and spending time with loved ones. This means that you might find yourself throwing together an impromptu get-together, or you might find friends or family members knocking on your door when you least expect it. Although you might like being able to offer your guests a nice snack when they come over, you probably aren't always prepared to do so.

If you have a meat and cheese gift basket on hand, however, you can open it up and put the offerings on a nice plate or platter. Since these gift baskets often come with nice cheese, sliced meat, crackers and more, you will have everything you need to offer your guests something tasty.

Always Have a Potential Gift on Hand

You never know when you might be invited to an unexpected party or when you might need an extra gift for someone on your list. Since meat and cheese gift baskets make great gifts for just about anyone, it's a good idea to keep a few on hand, just in case.

As you can see, it's always smart to keep a few of these nice gift baskets on hand during the winter months. If you contact us at Deli Direct, we can help you choose the right gift baskets for your needs.
