It never fails. The temperature zooms to over one hundred, and you have to make supper for the family. The air conditioning unit can only handle so much and it’s too hot for you to handle much more! It’s time to decide whether to call out for pizza and wings or think of something a little cooler. Then your eye falls on your Deli Direct Deli Classic meat and cheese gift basket. Walking to the fridge, you open it to see how you can combine its contents with the goodies in the gift basket. Grab some skewers, something to use for marinade (we suggest olive oil or Italian salad dressing) and all the fresh veggies you've got. Have we got some cool ideas for you (pun intended)!

Caesar Surfer

For this recipe, you’ll need:

  • Romaine lettuce with leaves separated
  • Diced tomatoes, cucumber and stuffed olives from your Deli Classic gift basket
  • Diced meats and cheeses

Combine all ingredients and drizzle with classic Caesar salad dressing. Finally finish off with Gourmet Chocolates from your Deli Classic gift basket!

Skewer Fun

Thread the ingredients onto the skewer. Fold the spinach leaves until they’re the size of the other ingredients. Marinate in a Pyrex dish using the olive oil and a little basil or Italian salad dressing for two to three hours.

Of course, you can always just chunk everything in the fridge into a gigantuous bowl and make a rocking salad. A different meal idea would include flour tortillas, your choice of Deli Direct cheese spreads, a little lettuce, a few chunks of summer sausage, diced tomatoes and strips of red onion for a new twist on a wrap. However you choose to beat the heat, we have the best quality meats, cheeses, pickles, olives, spreads and sweets. Just contact us when the heat is too much for you to stay in the kitchen.

I love finding uses for off-beat sauces. Pumpkin Butter is a new favorite. How many new uses have I found?

There are the obvious suggestions. You can use them as party dips for crackers and as spreads on toast or pancakes. I personally believe in putting huge dollops of pumpkin butter in oatmeal!

For a very healthful snack anytime, you can make a parfait by layering low-fat vanilla yogurt with pumpkin butter and topping the whole dish with granola.

Pumpkin Butter Dessert Bar

If you have no desire to eat something healthy and want to enjoy a decadent dessert, there is the pumpkin butter dessert bar. You mix yellow cake mix (reserving a cup), an egg, and 1/2 cup of melted butter and press the mix into the bottom of a 9×13 pan. Then you mix an entire jar of Pumpkin Butter with 2 eggs and whisk them together. Dump all that on your cake layer. Take your reserved cup of cake mix and add 1/4 cup softened butter, 1 tablespoon flour, 2 tablespoons light brown sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Mix this until crumbly and then throw it on top of the pumpkin layer. Bake that at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 to 45 minutes, and then top it with pecans for an extra crunch.

Pumpkin Butter Bread

If that is too much dessert for your pumpkin-eating preferences, there is pumpkin butter bread. This is made by whisking 2 cups flour with 1/2 teaspoon salt, 1/2 teaspoon baking soda, 1 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, and a half teaspoon each of ground cloves and nutmeg. Then you take an egg and beat it together with 1 cup of brown sugar, 1/2 cup of apple juice, 1/4 cup of melted butter, and 3/4 cup of pumpkin butter. Mix your dry and wet mixtures together and pour half into a bread pan. Pour another 3/4 cup of pumpkin butter on the batter and then top it with the rest of your batter. Bake this at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 50 to 60 minutes. Let this cool for 10 minutes, and you will have one moist bread!

This is just a sample of what you can do with pumpkin butter, and any culinary adventurer should definitely explore all the options. We have the best pumpkin butter for you to experiment with, so contact us if you're ever in the mood for a little pizzaz on your plate.

Although deli meats and sausages should definitely be a part of any holiday party plans, the tasty offerings shouldn’t stop there. After all, neither man nor beast can live on just meats alone. So we’ve compiled a list of incredible finger foods and lip-smacking party treats that go beyond the expected fare:

1.) Hot and Spicy Beans

Why not skip the messy, bland, three bean salads and go with something pickle-icious instead? Yes, we’re talking hot, spicy, pickled green beans baby! They look fantastic on a plate and may be eaten with the fingers or a fork. For added color, combine the Hot and Spicy Beans with other sliced, pickled veggies like yellow and orange peppers.

2.) Wasabi Peas

Pair those beans with another crunchy veggie that’s been given a palatable twist, dried wasabi peas. They are inherently spicy too. So the two foods would just go well together. For a great tablescape look, consider putting the wasabi peas in vegetable baskets instead of regular bowls. Your guests should love it!

3.) Bloody Mary Soaked Pickles

We’ve likely all seen pickles on a party platter before. That’s because they’re an essential part of most party plans. However, you can opt to buck tradition and give your guests something they’re not expecting. Items that come to our minds are pickles that have been soaked with unusual brines. Can anyone say, “bloody Mary pickles?”

4.) Stuffed Olives

Okay, so we know that stuffed olives are typical holiday fare but there are ways to make them atypical. For example, you could stuff them with ingredients that no one would expect. Excellent choices include asparagus, pearl onions, garlic cloves, artichokes, bleu cheese and jalapeno.

5.) Chubby Cheeks

Lastly, why not get a little corny? To do just that, create one or a series of bowls that contain our Chubby Cheeks snack. It’s a churro caramel corn nugget treat that tastes great alone or with a few modifications. To alter the nuggets flavor, think about adding a dusting of powdered sugar, carob or cocoa.
